I went to Cleveland over the weekend and got see Jimmy Dawkins play a killer set at a small club called Savanah's. Apparently Jimmy doesn't tour much so it was a real treat. He played some blistering guitar and has a tone that leaps right out at you.

The first set was good but the second set was a two hour clinic on Chicago blues guitar. There was an excellent local guy who played the whole second set, Jesse Dison I think his name was, who did most of the singing while Dawkins and the band got into a great groove. They did alot of covers but Dawkins made them his own, especially on a tough slow version of "All Your Love". Dawkins let the local guy play guitar quite a bit and then took over and showed him who's boss.

The band was solid with great tenor sax from Abb Locke who's played with just about everybody including Otis Rush. All in all one of the toughest blues shows I've seen in some time.

I asked Jimmy to sign one of his CD's "Fast Fingers" Jimmy Dawkins and he said he hated that "Fast Fingers" name! Instead he just signed it Jimmy Dawkins which was alright by me. Overall he was a very nice guy and sharp too.
